Human Resources and Personnel Management
Published in Hardcover by McGraw-Hill/Irwin (29 August, 1995)
Authors: William B., Jr. Werther and Keith A. Davis
Average review score:

My first approach to Human Resources
I am studying Bussiness Administration at the Universidad de los Andes, Santiago Chile. The thing I liked the most about this book is it's great amount of examples aplicable to all scenarios, including our Latinamerican environment, and the chapters' content, follows a practical and logic sequence. I strongly suggest that the author should publish an addendum to be sold separately, with his best advice on the solution for the problems-cases proposed at the end of each chapter. It is amazing how important is the human resource, professionally managed, for modern and successful organizations, even in Latinamerica, where due to low foreign and local investment and high unemployment there is a surplus of qualified professionals.

I Rode With Jeb Stuart: The Life and Campaigns of Major General J.E.B. Stuart
Published in Paperback by DaCapo Press (September, 1994)
Authors: Burke Davis and Henry B. McClellan
Average review score:

I Rode with JEB Stuart
More than McClellan's memoir, this is an early Stuart biography, and later biographies such as Davies' and Thomas' rely heavily upon it. McClellan became Stuart's AG in May '63, but his account starts with Stuart's youth.

This is a vital account in showing exactly what Stuart's cavalry did during the war: scouting, raiding, screening movements, fighting rearguard actions, gathering information, etc. One thing I didn't know was that Stuart's horse artillery, often under the command of the general himself and sometimes with regular batteries added, would take up a flank position during infantry battles and fire into the Federal ranks. The perpetual, obviously exhausting, activity of the cavalry also becomes obvious.

McClellan was present for the Gettysburg campaign, and his account is invaluable for this somewhat controversial issue. His writing becomes more personal at this point, and he recounts several anecdotes of interest. He continues his detailed recounting of ANV cavalry activity until Stuart's death; McClellan was present at the deathbed and ends his book there. This should be required reading for anyone interested in the cavalry.

Ibsen: Four Major Plays (Great Translations for Actors)
Published in Paperback by Smith & Kraus (July, 1995)
Authors: Rick Davis, Brian Johnston, and Henrik Johan Ibsen
Average review score:

Ibsen, by Rick Davis
This multi-volume set of Ibsen's work, edited and compiled by Chicago/Evanston author Rick Davis is a little masterpiece.

The new adaptations are marvelous, and Mr. Davis' commentaries show us how Ibsen is a master crafsperson, and how his work may be best contrasted with Strindberg -- who is anything but a master editor and foundation layer.

I think Mr. Davis shows us how important precision and planning can be to the writing process. Therefore I think this book is a must have for screenwriters, as well as fiction-writers -- not to mention playrights.

Idaho Fishing Guide: Hook, Line & Sinker
Published in Hardcover by Frank Amato Pubns (May, 1995)
Authors: Pete Zimowsky, Patrick Davis, and Pele Zimowsky
Average review score:

THE BEST AND MOST DETAILED GUIDE TO IDAHO FISHING
This book is truely a useful and interesting piece. Pete Zimowsky is one of a kind. I have enjoyed his outdoor articles here in the Idaho Statesman (Boise's paper) for years. He really knows his stuff. His writing style is full of personality, he makes you feel like your one of the family. The book has so much detail, he tells you everything from where to go, what lures to use and any other information that could prove useful for that particular fishing voyage. I have fished Idaho my whole life, but I could never have learned any of this information on my own.

If Mountains Die: A New Mexico Memoir
Published in Paperback by W.W. Norton & Company (July, 1994)
Authors: John Treadwell Nichols and William Davis
Average review score:

A beautiful, touching, and disturbing book.
New Mexico, and the Taos area in particular, has to be one of the most beautiful places on earth. John Nichols captures this beauty perfectly in his first of the Taos series, "If Mountains Should Die." Accompanied by heart-grabbing photographs, this book describes his first few years in Taos as a transplanted East-Coaster. Nichols not only captures the raw beauty of the land, but also the people that occupy it. Along with this, he describes the disturbing and continous struggle to keep it alive and free from suburbanization. His personal and touching accounts of his own struggle with the place and the people bring it alive in unexpected ways. There is also plenty of respect here, along with a deep anger for what is being done to the land, the people, and the unique way of life found in Taos Valley. As this is a very special place in my heart, I found it easy to cry and laugh along with him.

Images, Miracles, and Authority in Asian Religious Traditions
Published in Hardcover by Westview Press (March, 1998)
Author: Richard H. Davis
Average review score:

Images, Miracles, and Authority in Asian Religious Tradition
This book is great for whoever is looking for new way to look at Religious Images. Edited by Richard H.Davis who is the author of "Lives of Indian Images", it includes several articles of various scholars(i.e. Robert L.Brown, Phyllis Granoff, K.I. Koppedrayer,Koichi Shinohara and Donald F.McCallum). Undermining basic assumptions in studying religious images of Asia so far, articles in this book can bring reader a new way to view and approach religious Images of Asia. Because articles are from panels of A.A.S. on this topic from 1991 to 1993, a few of them seems to lack completeness.

An inspiring book for any counselor.
This book contains a number of simple, yet powerful, suggestions for helping counseling clients move from domination by their problem to reliance on their own solutions and strengths. The authors are inspiring and I intend to apply the perspectives in my healing work as a counselor.
